Vyapam scam: Two convicted in Gwalior special court for impersonation

Gwalior, Aug 12 (IANS) The Special Court dealing with Vyapam cases in Gwalior on Wednesday convicted and sentenced two private individuals, Amitesh and Vipin Kumar, to three years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 5,000 each.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had re‑registered the case on August 5, 2015, following orders of the Supreme Court of India in Writ Petitions (Civil) Nos. 372/2015 and 417/2015. The original FIR was lodged on March 9, 2014, at Police Station Cantt, Guna, based on a complaint filed by the Superintendent of the Examination Centre at Government PG College, Guna.

According to the complaint, a person appearing as candidate Vipin Kumar was stopped inside the examination hall after the invigilator noticed that he did not resemble the photograph on record. The Examination Superintendent carried out a preliminary verification and thereafter got the FIR registered against the impersonator.

The person was identified as Amitesh, a resident of Ghaziabad district in Uttar Pradesh. He confessed that he had appeared in the examination on behalf of the original candidate, Vipin Kumar, a resident of district Moradabad, also in Uttar Pradesh.

The CBI took over the probe and, after completing the investigation, filed a chargesheet on October 6, 2016, against both accused persons. Amitesh was arrayed as the solver who had impersonated the genuine candidate, while Vipin Kumar was the original candidate who had arranged for the impersonation.

The Special Court, after conducting a full trial and examining the evidence placed on record by the CBI, held both accused guilty of the offences and sentenced them to rigorous imprisonment for three years and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each.

The case forms part of the larger series of investigations into the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (Vyapam) scam, in which the CBI has been examining multiple instances of impersonation, paper leaks and other irregularities in recruitment and entrance examinations conducted by the Board.

The conviction marks another judicial outcome in the long‑running probes that began after the Supreme Court transferred a large number of related cases to the CBI for a fair and independent investigation. The sentence was pronounced on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, by the Special Court, Vyapam Cases, Gwalior.
