Trinamool seeks time from President, Governor to complain about law and order situation in Bengal

Kolkata, Sep 3 (IANS) The Trinamool Congress led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, on Thursday, sought time from President Droupadi Murmu and state Governor R.N. Ravi to complain about the law and order situation in West Bengal.

An insider from the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress said that letters have been sent both to President Murmu and Governor Ravi on Thursday seeking appointments with them.

“Once the appointments are given, the party delegations will detail in front of the President and the Governor about the series of attacks on Trinamool leaders, party workers and even party offices since the new Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari-led regime took over West Bengal after Assembly elections earlier this year,” said a leader from the Trinamool Congress.

The letters to the President and the Governor followed a social media statement issued earlier in the day by Abhishek Banerjee, the Trinamool’s general secretary and Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha MP, where he attached a video of an attack on this Camac Street office in Central Kolkata, allegedly by the BJP activists early on Thursday morning.

Soon after that, Abhishek Banerjee issued a second social media statement claiming that during the last one month two of his offices, first at Amtala within Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency in the South 24 Parganas district and the second at Camac Street had been subjected to vandalism and ransacking.

“The police and BJP goons seem to fear neither the law nor the judiciary. This is no longer mere lawlessness. This is open defiance of the rule of law. If this does not shake the conscience of the judiciary, what will?” questioned Abhishek Banerjee in his second social media post.

He also questioned whether the Judiciary will finally intervene to uphold the rule of law, protect constitutional rights and ensure that the authority of the Constitution is not reduced to a mere formality in West Bengal.

Surprisingly, there had been no reaction from Mamata Banerjee over the Camac Street incident till the time the report was filed.

There has been a lot of controversy over Abhishek Banerjee’s Camac Street party office in the last few days after FIRs were registered over a row that erupted during the removal of an illegal billboard of the Trinamool Congress from the roof of the office building last week.

Abhishek Banerjee, his personal assistant, Sumit Roy, and the party’s Rajya Sabha member, Derek O’Brien, have already been questioned by the Kolkata Police in the matter in the last couple of days.
