MP: Congress leader Anwar Qadri arrested in fake arms licence case

Indore, Aug 6 (IANS) Congress leader Anwar Qadri, popularly known as Anwar ‘Dacait’, was arrested by the Indore police on Thursday in connection with a fake arms licence case after remaining absconding for several months, officials said.

Qadri, who has more than 27 criminal cases registered against him, was arrested by the Sadar Bazar police after his release on bail in another criminal case.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) Narendra Rawat said the case pertains to an incident in February 2025 in which Qadri allegedly entered the house of Javed Khan with a firearm and assaulted him.

“During the investigation, it was found that the firearm had allegedly been procured based on a fake arms licence purportedly issued from Kishtwar district of J&K. Accordingly, a case was registered under relevant provisions of the Arms Act, cheating and other applicable sections,” Rawat said.

Police said Qadri could not be arrested earlier as he was lodged in jail in connection with another criminal case registered at the Banganga police station. He was taken into custody immediately after his release on bail.

“After receiving information about his release on bail, our team acted promptly and arrested him in the fake arms licence case. He had been absconding in this matter for several months,” Rawat said.

According to police, Qadri has a long criminal record, with more than 27 cases registered against him at various police stations in Indore.

The cases include charges of murder, attempt to murder, robbery, extortion, assault and illegal possession of arms. Preventive action under the National Security Act (NSA) had also been initiated against him in the past.

“The investigation is underway from all angles. We are verifying the source of the forged licence and the role of every person involved. Further legal action will be taken based on the evidence collected during the investigation,” the DCP said.

Police said Qadri was produced before a court after his arrest, and further investigation into the case is underway.
