Gajendra Singh Shekhawat questions Rahul Gandhi’s prospects of becoming PM

Jaipur, Aug 13 (IANS) Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Thursday questioned the prospects of Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi becoming Prime Minister, asserting that the country’s highest office is not a family legacy but a position earned through public trust and electoral legitimacy.

Taking a direct swipe at LoP Rahul Gandhi in a social media post, Shekhawat highlighted the Nehru‑Gandhi family’s political lineage and argued that political inheritance alone cannot guarantee success.

“Your father was Prime Minister, your grandmother was Prime Minister, and your great‑grandfather was also Prime Minister; yet, you know that you will never become Prime Minister,” Shekhawat wrote. He added that political success cannot be secured merely by relying on a family name or legacy.

According to Shekhawat, qualities such as public acceptance, leadership ability, political credibility and commitment to the nation ultimately determine a leader’s journey. He suggested that LoP Rahul Gandhi’s political frustration was increasing with age, taking another pointed dig at his ambitions.

“Pray to God to grant you the strength to accept this reality,” he remarked.

The comments come amid continued exchanges between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, with both sides frequently targeting each other over leadership, governance and political legacy.

Shekhawat’s statement sought to distinguish between hereditary influence and electoral legitimacy, stressing that the Prime Minister’s chair cannot be treated as an entitlement passed down from one generation to the next.

The remarks are likely to intensify the ongoing war of words between the BJP and Congress, particularly over LoP Rahul Gandhi’s leadership and the Congress party’s historical association with the Prime Minister’s Office.
