Dhanbad police parade 700 history sheeters, administer oath to shun crime

Dhanbad, July 2 (IANS) In a unique initiative aimed at not only curbing crime but also helping people with criminal records return to the mainstream, the police in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad on Thursday conducted a district-wide parade of around 700 such people and administered an oath asking them to stay away from unlawful activities.

Police officials claimed that it was the first such district-level exercise in Jharkhand.

People with criminal records from different police station areas were called to the police lines, where their identities were verified, photographs were taken, and their records were cross-checked.

Addressing the gathering, Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhat Kumar, City SP Ritwik Srivastava and Rural SP S. Mohammad Yaqub said the initiative was not intended to humiliate anyone but to provide an opportunity for reform and rehabilitation.

He said that people with criminal histories were being given a chance to return to the social mainstream and lead normal lives. He assured them of police support if they abandoned criminal activities but warned that any repeat offence would invite strict legal action.

The SSP said the police have records of more than 3,000 such individuals in the district. While 700 people were called in the first phase, the remaining individuals would be summoned in a phased manner.

He further stated that those who have not been involved in any criminal activity for a long period can approach the police station in charge concerned and apply for verification of their conduct. Based on an inquiry and in accordance with the rules, their names may be considered for removal from the list.

Prabhat Kumar made it clear that the police would continue to monitor the activities of all identified individuals. He cautioned that anyone found re-engaging in criminal activities would face stringent legal consequences.

He also pointed out that a criminal record can adversely affect processes such as obtaining character certificates, passports, and government employment.

Police officials appealed to those present to share information about criminal activities occurring in their localities.

The Dhanbad police described the campaign as a significant step towards both crime prevention and reform-oriented policing.
