New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS) Delhi Police foiled a potential criminal act in the national Capital’s Sunder Nagri area after a team from Nand Nagri Police Station apprehended a habitual offender and recovered an illegal firearm, live ammunition and a knife from his possession, officials said on Saturday.

An official statement said that on August 7 at about 06:50 p.m., a police team comprising ASI Pramod, ASI Anil, HC Deepak and Ct. Parveen was conducting routine patrolling in the Sunder Nagri area, when they received secret information that a suspicious person carrying illegal arms was present near H-Block, Sulabh Shauchalaya at Jhuggi Sunder Nagri in Delhi.

Acting swiftly on the information, the police team reached the spot and noticed a person who attempted to flee on seeing the cops. Subsequently, the accused was chased and apprehended by the team.

According to officials, the accused was identified as 23-year-old Shahnawaz alias Shanu, a resident of Sunder Nagri.

Police said that a search of his possession led to the recovery of one country-made semi-automatic pistol, four live cartridges and one dragon knife.

Accordingly, FIR No. 434/2026 U/S 25/54/59 Arms Act at PS Nand Nagri, has been registered.

Further, officials said that upon sustained interrogation, accused Shahnawaz alias Shanu admitted to committing the crime and disclosed his source of arms which is being probed.

Police have also found that the accused is a habitual offender and has been previously involved in five criminal cases relating to attempt to murder, robbery, snatching and theft.

Further investigation in the case is underway.

Recently, Delhi Police solved four similar criminal cases, including one robbery and three snatching incidents, with the arrest of two habitual offenders by the team of Police Station Harsh Vihar. The accused include a Bad Character of the area and an externee. The motorcycle allegedly used in the commission of the crimes has also been recovered.

The action was initiated following a complaint lodged by Rinku Kumari, based on which FIR No. 240/2026 was registered at PS Harsh Vihar under Sections 309(4), 309(6), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
