Delhi Assembly to open its doors to citizens for I-Day celebrations
New Delhi, Aug 13 (IANS) The historic Delhi Legislative Assembly will open its doors to the general public on August 14 and 15, inviting citizens to experience the institution and its heritage as part of the 80th Independence Day celebrations, an official said on Thursday.
The Assembly premises, which will be illuminated in the evening, will remain open to visitors from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on both days, with no prior registration required.
The celebrations will bring together history, culture and public participation. The Border Security Force Band and Central Reserve Police Force will perform patriotic compositions, the official said in a statement.
Cultural presentations by the Sahitya Kala Parishad will showcase India’s artistic traditions.
The programme will be attended by Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, Members of the Legislative Assembly and other distinguished dignitaries.
Welcoming citizens to the Assembly, Speaker Gupta said that Independence Day is not only an occasion to remember the sacrifices that secured India’s freedom, but also an opportunity for citizens to deepen their connection with the democratic institutions that sustain the Republic.
Gupta said that opening the doors of the Vidhan Sabha to the people reflects the principle that democratic institutions ultimately belong to the citizens they serve.
Visitors will have an opportunity to explore the historic Assembly building and important heritage sites within the complex, while learning about the institution’s place in Delhi’s legislative and democratic history.
The initiative seeks to bring citizens, particularly young people, closer to the traditions, institutions and values that have shaped India’s democratic journey, the statement said.
The performances by the BSF, CRPF Band and the Sahitya Kala Parishad will add a cultural dimension to the celebrations, combining patriotic music with presentations reflecting India’s diverse artistic heritage.
The programme is intended to celebrate both the spirit of national unity and the cultural diversity that remains integral to India’s identity.
The statement said that visitors will be required to carry a valid identity document, such as an Aadhaar card, for entry into the Assembly premises.
