Congress strengthens tribal outreach with fresh state leadership appointments

By IANS

New Delhi, July 11 (IANS) In a significant move to bolster its engagement with tribal communities across the country, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Saturday announced the appointment of new State Chairpersons for the All India Adivasi Congress.

The decision, approved by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, aims to invigorate the party’s grassroots presence in key tribal-dominated regions.

According to a press statement issued by AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, the appointments will take immediate effect.

The move is seen as part of the Congress’ broader strategy to address the aspirations of Adivasi populations, who have historically faced socio-economic challenges and seek greater political representation.

The newly appointed chairpersons are — Umesh Chandra from Uttar Pradesh, Raj Oraon from Jharkhand, Sanghrima Chongthu from Mizoram, Sameer Anup Minj from Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Suresh Ramanbhai Radiya from Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

These appointments cover strategically important areas with substantial tribal populations.

Jharkhand and parts of Uttar Pradesh have large Adivasi communities that play a decisive role in state politics.

The inclusion of northeastern and island territories like Mizoram and Andaman and Nicobar indicates the Congress’ commitment to inclusive development across diverse geographies.

The All India Adivasi Congress serves as the tribal wing of Congress, working to advocate for the rights of Scheduled Tribes, including issues related to land rights, forest conservation, education, healthcare, and reservation policies.

These appointments will help the party reorganise its cadre, improve coordination with local leadership, and prepare for upcoming electoral battles by addressing long-pending tribal concerns.

The Congress has been vocal about protecting tribal interests.

With these new appointments, the party hopes to translate its policy commitments into stronger organisational machinery at the state level.

The fresh Congress leadership is expected to focus on expanding membership, organising awareness campaigns on constitutional safeguards for tribals, and ensuring effective implementation of welfare schemes.

The new chairpersons are now tasked with mobilising Adivasi communities, strengthening the party’s connect at the booth level, and playing a pivotal role in shaping the Congress’ tribal agenda ahead of future Assembly and Parliamentary elections.
