Bengal BJP empowers district-level observers to ensure better coordination with MPs, MLAs

Kolkata, Aug 9 (IANS) The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to grant additional powers to the party’s district-level observers to ensure better coordination between the district committee office-bearers and the MPs and MLAs from the districts concerned.

A state committee member said it has often come to notice that there is a lack of coordination between the district committee office-bearers, such as the district presidents and the district general secretaries, and the MPs and MLAs in certain districts.

“If this continues and is not addressed immediately, this lack of coordination will have a long-term impact both on the implementation of different social welfare projects in these districts as well as strengthening the district, blocks and booth-level organisational network in the district concerned. In such a situation, the party’s state leadership has entrusted the district-level observers to ensure better coordination between the party’s district presidents, district general secretaries and the elected MPs and MLAs from the districts concerned,” said a member of the party’s state committee.

At the same time, he added, the state unit of the BJP has given special responsibility to district-level observers to identify “scammers” at the grassroots level within the party.

“The party’s district observers will identify those involved in extortion syndicates and those engaging in anti-party and immoral activities,” said the state committee member.

According to Samik Bhattacharya, the BJP’s state president and the party’s Rajya Sabha member, the people of West Bengal had not voted in the recently concluded Assembly elections only to change the faces in administration. “They voted to bring an end to corruption in administration. We are taking strong internal disciplinary action whenever and wherever any deviation comes to our notice. The Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, since the very first day, has been trying to bring change in the system,” Bhattacharya said.

Last week, the Bengal unit of the BJP made public the details of action taken against party insiders since the change in regime in the state in May to give a clear message of sincerity on the issue of “zero tolerance against corruption” as pronounced by the party leadership,

As per the details provided by the BJP’s internal disciplinary committee in the state, in the last three months — May, June and July — over 200 party insiders have been served with show-cause notices. The action came after repeated complaints against them for involvement in activities such as corruption, extortion and other immoral acts considered inappropriate as per the party policies.
