Bengal: Banglar Bari project name to be changed to Paschim Banga Awas

Kolkata, Aug 5 (IANS) The name of the previous state government’s Banglar Bari project is going to be changed permanently and will now be called Paschim Banga Awas, said a government official on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will start the process of directly transferring the second instalment of money to the accounts of 10 lakh families in the state under this newly named project from the Nabanna Sabhaghar at the state secretariat.

The previous Trinamool Congress government had promised to provide grants to a total of 18 lakh families in the second phase to build houses. Rs 1 lakh 20 thousand was given to each family in this project. The first instalment of Rs 60 thousand was also given before the Assembly elections.

Due to the change of government in the state, the second instalment was pending. This time, after a fresh survey, the new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is going to send the second instalment to the accounts of the eligible ones.

The then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had renamed the central government’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana as Banglar Bari. Now the project name will be changed, and the first programme under the renamed project will be held tomorrow.

According to sources in the state secretariat, only those who have completed the construction work of their houses with the first instalment money as per the project rules have been considered eligible for the second instalment.

A new survey will be conducted on the 8 lakh families who have not yet completed the first level of construction work despite receiving the money.

Once the construction work is completed up to the specified level with the first instalment money, a new survey will be conducted. Based on that survey report, the state government will send money to their accounts in the next phase.

The money will be given only after thorough scrutiny and verification. The Chief Minister has instructed this to officials of the concerned department.
