Itanagar, Aug 8 (IANS) Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen K.T. Parnaik (Retd) on Saturday directed Director General of Police S.D. Singh Jamwal to expedite border fencing work to help prevent incidents of extortion and kidnapping in the state.

The Governor, while reviewing the law and order situation with DGP Jamwal at Lok Bhavan in Itanagar, also discussed the security situation in the Tirap‑Changlang‑Longding region, which shares an unfenced border with Myanmar.

He advised the DGP to ensure that police personnel remain alert, well‑equipped and prepared to undertake search and rescue operations during natural disasters such as landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts and other calamities that frequently affect the hilly terrain of Arunachal Pradesh.

Parnaik underscored the importance of maintaining quick reaction teams, improving inter‑agency coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), district administrations and local communities, and conducting regular mock exercises to enhance preparedness.

Both the Governor and the state police chief discussed the prevailing security environment, crime prevention measures, public safety, disaster preparedness and the overall readiness of the State Police to address emerging challenges.

Lt Gen Parnaik (Retd) stressed that a secure environment is essential for the state’s continued socio‑economic development and for realising the vision of a ‘Viksit Arunachal’. He shared a ‘SURAKSHA APP’ which enables real‑time security for citizens in cities and recommended that the app be studied and implemented as convenient.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Crime Branch, Joy Tirkey, was also present during the review meeting.

Meanwhile, the Governor recently held detailed discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on a wide range of issues, including law and order, internal security, border management, infrastructure development, drug trafficking, geospatial applications and strengthening the cooperative movement in the northeastern state.

A Raj Bhavan official said the Governor met the Union Home Minister and discussed matters relating to law and order, internal security, border area development, the application of geospatial technologies and various initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperative institutions in Arunachal Pradesh.

During the meeting, Parnaik shared his assessment of the prevailing law and order situation and briefed the Home Minister on recent developments concerning security and border management. He highlighted the strategic importance of the Tirap, Changlang and Longding (TCL) region and discussed ongoing efforts to strengthen security infrastructure in sensitive border areas.

He also elaborated on measures being undertaken to improve border management, including the installation of fencing and the enhancement of surveillance mechanisms to ensure greater security and vigilance.

The Governor drew the Home Minister’s attention to the growing menace of drug trafficking and substance abuse in the state, which, he noted, is being fuelled by narcotics originating from across international borders and transiting through neighbouring states before entering Arunachal Pradesh.
