MP: Woman paraded with shoe garland in Ujjain village, six arrested (Lead)

Ujjain, July 2 (IANS) In a shocking incident that has stirred outrage in Ujjain, a woman and her second husband were subjected to public humiliation in Harniyakheda village.

The woman, who had left her first husband three years ago and later married another man, returned to the village with her spouse on Tuesday to settle a land dispute.

Their arrival triggered a violent reaction from her former in-laws and several villagers, leading to a disgraceful episode that has since gone viral on social media.

According to senior police officials, the mob tore the woman’s clothes, cut her hair, and forced her to wear a garland of shoes while parading her through the village.

Her husband was also brutally assaulted during the attack. A video of the incident surfaced online on Thursday, exposing the cruelty and drawing widespread condemnation.

Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma confirmed that the accused belong to the woman’s former marital family.

A case has been registered against 11 individuals, including three women. Six of them have already been arrested, while five others remain at large. Authorities have assured that the fugitives will be apprehended soon.

Jharda police station in-charge and investigation officer said that the incident occurred around midday on Tuesday, approximately 20 kilometres from the station headquarters.

When police teams reached the spot after receiving information about the assault, panic spread among the villagers. Officers managed to arrest Sumer Singh, Badrilal, Kachru, and three others, who were later produced in court and sent to jail.

The search for the remaining accused continues, with police intensifying raids.

Given the tense atmosphere in the village, security has been tightened to prevent further unrest. Investigations revealed that the woman had initially married a local youth but left him three years ago to live with another man from the same village.

The couple later married and settled in Indore. Their return to Harniyakheda for a land-related matter prompted the woman’s former father-in-law to gather villagers and design the assault.

Disturbingly, while the couple endured the ordeal, many villagers chose to record videos rather than intervene. Police have now recorded the statements of the victims and are pursuing strict action against those involved.
