Tripura CM flags off NE’s first MEMU electric train service

Agartala, July 4 (IANS) The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) on Saturday introduced the first-ever Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) electric train service in the Northeast, connecting Tripura with southern Assam.

Flagging off the MEMU passenger train at Agartala Railway Station, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said the launch marked a new chapter in the state’s railway history with the commencement of electric train services.

Equipped with modern passenger amenities, the MEMU train has a carrying capacity of 3,600 passengers and connects Agartala with Karimganj in neighbouring Assam. The launch also marks the introduction of the first MEMU train service in the Northeastern region under the Northeast Frontier Railway.

Addressing the gathering, Saha said the initiative has been taken to provide faster, safer and more comfortable travel in tune with the demands of modern times.

He said the state-of-the-art MEMU service would make daily commuting easier, more convenient and time-efficient for thousands of passengers while offering a modern, safe and environmentally friendly mode of transport.

Expressing gratitude, the Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and all those associated with the project for introducing the modern rail service.

“Tripura has become the first state in the Northeast to receive this MEMU train service. The new service will provide a comfortable journey for passengers while strengthening regional rail connectivity,” Saha said.

The Agartala-Karimganj MEMU train will operate six days a week, except Sundays, with regular commercial services beginning from July 6.

According to NFR officials, the environment-friendly electric MEMU train is equipped with several modern passenger amenities, including LED lighting, 12 stainless steel coaches, bio-toilets, a GPS-based passenger information system that displays next station and platform details, a public address system, CCTV surveillance, and several other advanced features.

NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said the train, which had earlier been operating as a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU), has now been successfully upgraded to a Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU), marking a major technological advancement following the electrification of the route.

He said the historic development represents another significant milestone in NFR’s continued efforts towards railway modernisation, sustainable transportation and enhanced passenger convenience following the rapid electrification of railway routes across the region.

Sharma described the introduction of the first MEMU service in Tripura and the Northeast as a landmark achievement in NFR’s mission to provide faster, cleaner and more efficient rail connectivity.

Unlike DEMU trains, MEMU services use electric traction, making them environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and more economical to operate. MEMU trains also offer superior acceleration and deceleration, enabling faster station-to-station travel and reducing overall travel time on suburban and short-distance routes.

They ensure smoother rides, lower noise levels, reduced maintenance requirements and zero emissions at the point of operation, thereby reinforcing Indian Railways’ commitment to a green and sustainable transportation system.

The NFR CPRO said the new Agartala-Karimganj-Agartala MEMU service would greatly benefit daily commuters, students, office-goers, traders and tourists by providing a reliable, comfortable and eco-friendly mode of transportation between Tripura and adjoining areas of Assam.

He said the improved rail connectivity would facilitate the easier movement of people, strengthen social and economic ties between neighbouring states, and promote regional development.

The new service would also support local commerce by enabling convenient travel for small business owners and workers while encouraging greater use of rail transport over road travel, Sharma added.

“As the first MEMU train service in Tripura and the entire Northeast, this pioneering initiative reflects NFR’s vision of transforming rail infrastructure, enhancing passenger experience and supporting the region’s overall development through modern, sustainable and customer-centric railway services,” the CPRO said.

Among those present at the inaugural function were Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Rajya Sabha member Rajib Bhattacharjee, MLA Meena Rani Sarkar and Lumding Division Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Sameer Lohana.

Meanwhile, Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath had earlier announced that the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (TSECL) has completed 100 per cent electrification of the state’s 271-km railway network.

He noted that the first train reached Dharmanagar in northern Tripura in 1964, while it took another 44 years for the railway network to reach the state capital Agartala in 2008. Rail connectivity was further extended to Sabroom in southern Tripura in 2019.

Nath said that after Narendra Modi assumed office as Prime Minister in 2014, the broad-gauge conversion project in Tripura was completed, replacing the earlier metre-gauge railway line. He also noted that the international railway link connecting Agartala with Akhaura in Bangladesh was completed in 2023.

“The present state and Central governments are committed to ensuring development and accelerating the state’s progress,” Nath had said.

The broad-gauge railway network from Churaibari on the Tripura-Assam border to Sabroom near the India-Bangladesh border now spans 271 km, with all related development and expansion works completed within seven years, the minister had said.

Under the Centre’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, redevelopment work is currently underway at four railway stations in Tripura: Agartala, Udaipur, Kumarghat, and Dharmanagar.

Tripura is currently connected to major cities, including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Firozpur and Patna, through several long-distance express train services.
