Thousands do stretching in Chandigarh, Haryana to stay fit

Chandigarh, June 21 (IANS) Thousands of enthusiasts participated on Sunday in the 12th International Yoga Day events at several places in Chandigarh and across Haryana and Punjab to stay fit and improve flexibility.

In Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, the main event was held at the Tiranga Urban Park in Sector 17, where a large number of people turned up early in the morning.

Punjab Governor and Union Territory Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria joined people to improve their flexibility.

In Haryana, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini led his Cabinet colleagues and government functionaries at the main event in Panchkula town, near here.

A majority of ministers attended the functions to mark the day at all district headquarters.

Visiting BJP national President Nitin Nabin participated in the International Yoga Day at Lovely Professional University (LPU) near Jalandhar in Punjab along with hundreds of party activists.

At Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), the CCRYN — Collaborative Centre for Mind Body Intervention through Yoga — saw a mass yoga session along with the participation of healthcare professionals, faculty members, students, staff, and yoga enthusiasts.

On the eve of International Yoga Day, over 350 people participated in the ‘Livathon — Yoga for Life’ — at the Sukhna Lake here, where residents, health experts, fitness enthusiasts, senior citizens and youth enthusiastically participated in a special yoga session conducted under the guidance of certified yoga instructors.

In Punjab, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel performed yoga at the zero line at the joint check post at Attari near Amritsar.

In Chandigarh, several yoga associations and non-governmental organisations participated in the event organised at over 100 locations, showcasing commitment to the promotion of yoga and wellbeing. Yogacharya Balwinder Kumar, along with journalists and their family members, performed yoga in the Chandigarh Press Club premises here.

This year’s theme was ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’, highlighting the message of holistic health and healthy ageing through yoga.
