Rs 2.25 crore worth of gold, silver burgled from house in Karnataka’s Tumakuru

Tumakuru (Karnataka), Sep 3 (IANS) A family in Tumakuru was left shocked after gold and silver worth an estimated Rs 2.25 crore were allegedly burgled from their residence at Chikpet in Tumakuru city, as the family was away attending their son’s wedding celebrations, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place at the residence of Lakshman Ganapat Pawar, who owns a gold testing unit and is originally from Maharashtra.

According to Pawar, the family had travelled to their native place in connection with the wedding. After the wedding, the family remained away while their staff returned to Tumakuru.

On August 31, one of their workers reportedly called the family and informed them that the grill on the compound wall had been cut and suspected that unidentified persons had entered the house and committed theft.

The family returned to Tumakuru at around 11.30 p.m. on Wednesday and found the grill of the compound wall cut. The front door had also been damaged, apparently with a weapon, while the window grill was found broken.

On entering the house, the family found cupboards and drawers in the bedroom opened and clothes scattered around. The burglars had allegedly taken away gold that had been kept beneath the cot on which family members usually slept.

The accused also reportedly stole gold and silver biscuits that had been kept in a wall compartment. The stolen valuables included gold biscuits, gold ornaments and silver articles.

The family suspects that the burglary may have been carried out by persons familiar with the house and aware of where the valuables were kept.

A complaint has reportedly been lodged with the police, and an investigation is underway to identify the accused and recover the stolen valuables.

In January 2026, a couple working as domestic help allegedly stole valuables worth approximately Rs 18 crore from a builder’s residence at Yamaluru near Marathahalli in Bengaluru. The stolen loot included 11.5 kg of gold and diamond jewelry (valued at Rs 17.74 crore), 5 kg of silver, and Rs 11.5 lakh in cash. The theft took place while the family was out attending a function.

In March 2026, a 19-year-old thief from Rajasthan broke into a locked villa in Judicial Layout, Yelahanka. He decamped with 1.833 kg of diamond and gold ornaments worth ₹3 crore while the resident was travelling abroad. The Bengaluru police tracked him down to his native village and recovered the entire stash.
