Protecting data ‘as important as borders’: MP CM

Bhopal, June 15 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh will establish a Cybersecurity Research Centre in collaboration with the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering (MCTE), Mhow, and leading academic institutions to strengthen the state’s ability to tackle emerging cyber threats, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on Monday.

Speaking at a workshop on ‘Strengthening the Cybersecurity Framework for State Data’ in Bhopal, the Chief Minister said cybersecurity has become a critical governance priority as government services and financial transactions increasingly move online.

“Data has emerged as the most valuable asset in today’s digital era, and ensuring its security has become imperative. Protecting data is as important as protecting the nation’s borders,” Yadav said.

He said cyber threats are evolving rapidly, and governments must adopt advanced systems to safeguard public data and digital infrastructure. Referring to the growing use of modern technologies and drones in security operations, Yadav said new technological developments have created fresh security challenges that require constant vigilance.

The proposed Cybersecurity Research Centre will focus on research, innovation and skill development. It will be equipped with advanced monitoring systems to detect cyberattacks and strengthen the state’s cyber defence capabilities.

Highlighting the scale of digital governance in Madhya Pradesh, the Chief Minister said more than 1,700 government services are currently being delivered online. He stressed that protecting citizens’ data and government databases has become increasingly important as digital services expand.

“There can be no room for negligence in cybersecurity. It is distressing when cybercriminals can wipe out a person’s lifetime savings within moments. Comprehensive mechanisms are required to address such invisible threats,” he said.

Additional Director General of Police A. Sai Manohar said six Cyber Commandos are currently serving in the state, and 38 more have been selected. All 44 Cyber Commandos will be deployed in the State Cyber Cell before Simhastha‑2028. He added that around 3,000 engineering students and young volunteers will be trained as “Cyber Warriors” to help monitor and prevent cyberattacks during the Simhastha congregation.

Principal Secretary, Science and Technology, M. Selvendran, said MP‑CERT has been established to monitor cyber threats and ensure rapid response. Officials also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen cybersecurity infrastructure through the Security Operations Centre at the State Data Centre and the State Wide Area Network (SWAN).

The Chief Minister reiterated that the state government is committed to making cybersecurity a top priority as digital services continue to expand across sectors.
