MP: Three children drown in rainwater-filled pit in Sehore
Sehore, Aug 19 (IANS) Three children, including two brothers, drowned in a rainwater-filled pit in Sehore district on Wednesday after they allegedly entered the water while playing, police said.
The incident took place around 1 p.m. near Mogra Road in Ichhawar. The children reportedly went there to play and entered the pit to bathe but could not come out because of the water’s depth.
The deceased were identified as 12-year-old Prashant, his 10-year-old brother Prithviraj, and 11-year-old Dikshant. Prashant and Prithviraj were sons of Subhal Bagri, while Dikshant was the son of Akhilesh Bagri. All three lived in Ward No. 12 in Ichhawar.
The incident came to light after residents spotted the bodies floating in the water and alerted the police.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Prashant Choubey told IANS that relatives informed the police about the drowning.
“When the police reached the spot, they found three children of different age groups. The pothole on Mogra Road was full of water. The children were unable to control themselves because of the water’s depth. All three died in the accident,” he said.
A police team retrieved the bodies and sent them to hospital for post-mortem examination. Choubey said police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the condition of the pit and any possible negligence.
“We will investigate the incident from various angles. If any negligence or lapse is found, we will investigate that aspect as well,” he added.
The incident has raised concerns over the safety of open construction pits during the monsoon, particularly in areas where children may venture while playing.
