Moderate rain likely in seven TN districts; temperatures set to rise

Chennai, Aug 27 (IANS) Seven districts of Tamil Nadu are likely to receive moderate rain on Thursday, even as the India Meteorological Department warned that temperatures could rise across the northern interior parts of the state over the next few days.

In its latest weather bulletin, the department said a weak low-pressure circulation persisted in the lower levels of the atmosphere over coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. Under its influence, moderate rainfall is expected at a few places in Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Tiruchi, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts during the day. Some places in the delta districts are also likely to experience moderate showers.

The forecast indicates that the rain will remain scattered rather than widespread, with conditions varying between neighbouring areas.

From Friday through August 30, moderate rainfall is likely at one or two places in districts located along the Western Ghats, the department said. Other parts of Tamil Nadu are expected to experience largely subdued rainfall activity during this period.

While parts of the state prepare for rain, the northern interior districts could face warmer weather. The maximum temperature in these areas is likely to rise by as much as three degrees Celsius between Thursday and August 30. The increase could result in hot and uncomfortable conditions, particularly during the afternoon hours.

Residents have been advised to remain prepared for contrasting weather conditions, with isolated rain in coastal, delta and Western Ghats regions and higher daytime temperatures in the northern interior belt.

Localised showers may offer temporary relief from the heat, though they are unlikely to bring a widespread decline in temperatures across the state.

In Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy during the day. Moderate rain may occur in a few parts of the city and its suburbs during the evening or night. However, rainfall is not expected to be uniform across the metropolitan area.

The state capital is otherwise likely to remain warm, with cloud cover increasing the possibility of brief evening showers.

The weather department will continue to monitor the weak atmospheric system near the Tamil Nadu coast and issue updates if there is any significant change in its strength or movement.

People travelling through rain-prone areas have been urged to follow local forecasts, especially during the evening, when showers could affect visibility and road conditions.
