Lachit Barphukan Police Academy emerging as national-level training hub: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, Sep 2 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday that the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy at Dergaon in the Golaghat district has emerged as a national-level police training institution, with personnel from Assam and several other states undergoing specialised training at the academy.

Chief Minister Sarma made the remarks after attending the passing-out parade of newly trained Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) and Assam Police Communication personnel at the academy.

Highlighting the growing role of the institution in police training, the Chief Minister said personnel from states, including Assam, Manipur and Goa, among others, are being trained at the Dergaon-based academy.

“I had the opportunity to witness the passing-out parade and was impressed by the performance of the personnel,” CM Sarma said, while congratulating the trainees who completed their training.

The Chief Minister added that the academy would also host the state-level conference of Superintendents of Police (SPs) over the next two days, bringing senior police officials together to deliberate on key law-and-order issues facing the state.

Chief Minister Sarma said he would stay at the police academy during the conference and participate in discussions aimed at further strengthening the Assam Police and improving its response to emerging challenges.

According to the Chief Minister, the conference will focus on a range of issues concerning policing and public safety, with crimes against women, crimes against children and the fight against drugs expected to figure prominently in the deliberations.

The discussions are also expected to provide an opportunity for senior police officials to assess existing policing strategies and examine measures to improve law enforcement and strengthen the overall security framework in Assam.

The Chief Minister’s visit to the academy comes as the institution expands its role beyond training Assam Police personnel, with police officials from other states also attending courses there.

The passing-out parade marked the completion of training for the latest batch of Deputy Superintendents of Police and Assam Police Communication personnel, with Chief Minister Sarma commending the trainees for their discipline and performance.

The two-day SP conference is expected to bring together senior officers from across Assam to discuss operational priorities and measures to tackle major law-and-order challenges in the state.
