New Delhi, Aug 25 (IANS) A CBI Court in Lucknow has convicted and sentenced Ajay Kumar Gaur, the then Branch Manager of the State Bank of India (SBI)’s Shahupuri Branch in Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli district, to four years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 90,000 in a bribery case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the case on February 26, 2018, against Gaur on the basis of a complaint alleging that he had demanded an illegal gratification of Rs 50,000 for sanctioning and disbursing a personal loan of Rs 10 lakh to the complainant.

The accused had sought a bribe equivalent to five per cent of the loan amount. The CBI subsequently laid a trap and caught Gaur red-handed while he was demanding and accepting Rs 40,000 as illegal gratification from the complainant.

Following the completion of the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against Gaur on April 27, 2018. Charges were subsequently framed against him on January 9, 2019.

After the completion of the trial, the Lucknow CBI Court convicted Gaur and sentenced him to four years’ imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 90,000.

Earlier, on August 21, the CBI arrested proclaimed offender Roop Singh, who had allegedly been absconding for nearly 23 years in connection with a case involving the criminal misappropriation of goods worth Rs 9 lakh from trucks transporting them to customers.

According to a CBI statement, Roop Singh was arrested after sustained efforts by the investigating agency. Earlier, co-accused Arjun Singh was arrested on November 7, 2025, after remaining absconding for nearly 22 years.

The case originated from Case No. 178/1998, registered at Amalner Police Station in Maharashtra on October 4, 1998, concerning the alleged theft and misappropriation of goods, including ghee and moong, loaded in two trucks.

It was alleged that on September 27, 1998, two truck drivers, Babu Khan and Aslam Khan, stole and misappropriated the goods.
