Calcutta HC rejects urgent hearing plea of Trinamool in bank accounts freeze case

Kolkata, July 7 (IANS) The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday rejected the plea filed by the Trinamool Congress faction led by Mamata Banerjee for an urgent hearing in the bank account freeze case.

A single bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya was of the view that the sky would not collapse if there was a delay of one day in hearing the case. After rejecting the plea, the court informed that the case would be heard on Thursday.

Recently, the bank account of Trinamool Congress was frozen. Challenging the decision, Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress approached the court. Senior advocates Kishore Datta and Abhishek Manu Singhvi are appearing in the case on behalf of Trinamool.

On Tuesday, Singhvi appeared in the Calcutta High Court, and a request was made for an urgent hearing of the case that day.

Advocate Datta’s plea was that senior lawyer Singhvi was present today, so the judge could hear the case today. However, the judge did not respond to the plea. The judge told Datta that if it is delayed by one day, the sky would not collapse. The court fixed the hearing for Thursday.

The hearing of this case was held last Tuesday. At that time, the court expressed doubts about the timing of the complaint, which led the police to freeze the account.

During the hearing, the judge said the court is worried about the timing of the complaint. The complaint was filed at 6:30 pm on June 28, and the next morning, the bank informed the court that the account had been frozen.

However, no specific crime was alleged regarding that account before the complaint was filed. The judge wondered then on what basis the police suddenly went to the bank to freeze the account so quickly after the complaint.

In the last hearing, advocate Singhvi argued on behalf of Trinamool. At that time, he asked whether the police could paralyse a political party by cutting off its lifeline.

The court has summoned the affidavit of the private bank on Sarat Bose Road in south Kolkata. The High Court wanted a statement from the bank authorities. Information regarding the progress of the investigation was supposed to be presented to the court this Tuesday.

With the hearing now scheduled for Thursday, the progress of the investigation will be presented then.
