Bengal: Man arrested for attempting to rape runaway minor in Baruipur

Kolkata, July 14 (IANS) The police have arrested a person for taking a minor girl to a rented house in South 24 Parganas district’s Baruipur in West Bengal and trying to rape her.

A senior police officer of Baruipur Police District said the minor had run away from her home in Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas district. She was lured by the accused after she met him at Sealdah station.

The accused has been produced before the Baruipur court on Tuesday, where the police sought his custody for further interrogation in connection with the incident. The police also rescued the minor and sent her home in Barrackpore.

According to locals, a young man named Samad Ali had taken a minor girl to a rented house under Baruipur police station on Monday. Several neighbours alleged that Samad tried to rape the girl in that house. They claimed to have caught him red-handed.

A commotion started in the area. Soon, the news reached Baruipur police station. The officers came and took the two to the police station. After interrogation, the accused was arrested.

According to the police, the minor’s house is in Barrackpore area of North 24 Parganas. She had come out of her home after an argument. First, she took the train to Sealdah station in Kolkata. That is where she met the accused.

Samad, a resident of Mathurapur in South 24 Parganas district, lured the girl. They took the train to Baruipur, where Samad lives in a rented house. There, he tried to rape the minor.

Meanwhile, the girl’s family has been contacted. Baruipur police station has already handed her over to the family.

It is worth mentioning that the Suryapur area of Baruipur became heated after the body of a minor was recovered on July 5. A person named Indrajit Mandal was killed in a mob lynching after the minor’s body was recovered. Later, the investigation revealed that he had no connection with the torture and death of the minor.

The body of a minor girl was recovered from a pond in Suryapur. It is alleged that she was gang-raped and murdered. That day, there was a huge protest in the area surrounding the minor’s body.

So far, four persons have been arrested in connection with the crime against the minor girl. One of them, Pravas Mondal, was killed in an encounter last week as he was trying to escape from police custody by snatching the firearm of an escorting cop.
