Bengal: Former Trinamool MP granted bail in obstructing police case

Kolkata, July 4 (IANS) Former Trinamool Congress MP Aparupa Poddar on Saturday surrendered in court and got interim bail in a recent case.

Aparupa, a two-time MP from Arambagh, will have to appear in the MP-MLA court after that. The Chandannagar Police Commissionerate has informed that a notice may be sent to Aparupa again.

The police had registered a suo motu case against Aparupa Poddar on charges of obstructing police work during the arrest of her husband and Trinamool councillor Shakir Ali by National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials in a Ram Navami violence case on Tuesday.

Aparupa had to appear at the Serampore police station for this yesterday. At the same time, the NIA court granted Shakir Ali conditional bail yesterday.

Today, Aparupa appeared at the Serampore sub-division court with her husband. The court granted her interim bail. However, the former MP has been ordered to appear in a special court at Mayukh Bhavan on September 30.

According to the police, Aparupa did not go to the police station on the specified day. For this, a non-bailable clause was added against her. As a result, Aparupa had to go to the court to get bail. After bail was granted on Saturday, the former MP said nothing about it.

Aparupa’s lawyer Joydeep Mukherjee said, “We will appear in the MP-MLA court at Mayukh Bhavan in Salt Lake in Kolkata on September 30.”

Regarding the police case, he said, “The police will do the police’s work. We will do our work. The court has accepted our word. The police can say a lot. Even though there is no incident of ‘attempt to murder’ as no one was ‘assaulted’! The police filed a suo motu case. We will fight it legally.”

On the other hand, Chandannagar Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Yadav said, “We had called her to get information. We may call her again. We have been asked to find out who was there that day. We will call again if necessary. We will send another notice to her.”
