Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid to get interim bail for attending 40th day function of father’s death

Srinagar, June 24 (IANS) Lok Sabha member, Engineer Rashid, will get interim bail to observe the ‘Chehlum’ function of his father, Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) Chief Spokesperson, Inam Un Nabi, said, “As per the earlier orders of the Hon’ble High Court, Member of Parliament from Baramulla, Engineer Rashid will be released tomorrow (Thursday) morning on interim bail for a period of five days to enable him to participate in the Chahlum (40th-day religious observance) of his late father.”

Inam Un Nabi said that the Chahlum of the late Khazir Mohammad Sheikh is scheduled to be observed in accordance with religious traditions, and Engineer Rashid will be joining his family members, relatives, well-wishers and supporters during the occasion.

Inam Un Nabi said that Engineer Rashid is expected to arrive in Srinagar on Thursday morning and will remain available in Srinagar from Friday afternoon onwards to receive people who wish to offer condolences and express solidarity with the bereaved family.

The AIP Chief Spokesperson said that while the family continues to mourn the loss of a respected elder, the occasion also carries emotional significance for Engineer Rashid, who has been unable to remain with his family owing to his prolonged incarceration.

Engineer Rashid is presently lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail as an accused in a terror-related money laundering case.

He announced last week that since he is not able to attend to the day-to-day issues of the people who elected him, he had decided to resign from the Lok Sabha.

His party leaders later said in Srinagar that Engineer Rashid will not be allowed to resign from the Lok Sabha without taking the opinion of the people of his Baramulla constituency.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Engineer Rashid defeated the vice president of the National Conference (NC) and the present Chief Minister Omar Abdullah by a margin of over 2 lakh votes in the Baramulla constituency.
