Assam: Health Minister reviews healthcare infrastructure in Majuli

Guwahati, Aug 27 (IANS) Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal on Thursday reviewed healthcare services and infrastructure in Majuli during a visit to the river island district, inspecting medical facilities and meeting with officials to discuss improving key health indicators.

Singhal visited the 50‑bed Ayurvedic Hospital at Sriram Chapori and took stock of treatment facilities, medical services, and the institution’s overall functioning.

He interacted with doctors, healthcare workers, patients and attendants to understand the hospital’s challenges and the requirements for improving healthcare delivery.

He said the problems identified during his inspection would be addressed as soon as possible.

The Minister emphasised the government’s objective of building strong, accessible and quality healthcare infrastructure in Majuli by ensuring better coordination between traditional Ayurvedic treatment and modern healthcare services.

Later, Singhal visited the Sri Sri Pitambar Dev Goswami District Civil Hospital, where he reviewed medical services, infrastructure and hospital management.

He again interacted with doctors, healthcare personnel, patients and attendants and sought feedback on difficulties and requirements related to healthcare delivery. He assured that necessary steps would be taken to address the issues identified.

During his visit, Singhal also paid obeisance at the historic Sri Sri Uttar Kamalabari Satra, one of Majuli’s important spiritual and cultural centres. He offered prayers for the welfare and prosperity of the people of Assam and observed the monastery’s Vaishnavite traditions.

At the Majuli Deputy Commissioner’s office, the Minister held a review meeting on the district’s health and family welfare indicators. Discussions covered maternal and child health, disease control, services provided by healthcare institutions, medical infrastructure and the progress of government health programmes.

Singhal stressed the need for focused, field-level interventions to improve health indicators further and ensure healthcare facilities reach people more effectively. He said the government was working continuously to ensure that residents of Majuli could access quality healthcare within the district itself.

Majuli MLA Bhuban Gam, Health and Family Welfare Department Additional Secretary Munindra Nath Nangte, along with senior health department officials and other concerned officials, accompanied the Minister during the visit.

The review assumes significance as Majuli, a river island district, faces distinctive challenges in ensuring access to healthcare services and infrastructure for its geographically dispersed population.
