Assam govt coordinating for safe return of stranded citizens in Nepal: CM Sarma
Guwahati, Aug 27 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the state government was aware of people from Assam being stranded in Nepal amid the ongoing floods and was coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure their safety and facilitate their earliest possible return home.
In a post on X, Sarma said the government was in touch with families of those stranded and coordinating with agencies to ensure their safety and return. His statement came as Nepal continued to grapple with floods that have disrupted normal life in several areas and left people stranded amid heavy rains and flash floods.
The Assam government has activated an assistance mechanism through Assam Bhawan in New Delhi for people from the state stranded in Nepal. According to a notice issued by the Office of the Resident Commissioner, Assam Bhawan, stranded citizens have been advised to contact the authorities for necessary assistance, support and coordination.
The notice said assistance numbers could be contacted round the clock for emergency help and information relating to stranded persons. Assam Bhawan officials listed contacts of Anuran Medhi, ACS, Assam Bhawan, New Delhi, and House Manager Vinod Kalita for assistance. Emergency assistance numbers were also provided.
The development is significant as the flood situation in Nepal has raised concerns about the safety of Indian nationals travelling or residing in affected areas. The Assam government has urged families with members stranded in Nepal to remain in contact with authorities and provide relevant information to facilitate coordination.
The state administration is maintaining contact with concerned agencies as efforts continue to ascertain the situation of stranded people and help them return safely.
The Chief Minister’s intervention comes amid heightened concern in Assam over developments in neighbouring Nepal, where flooding has affected transportation and communication in several areas. Authorities have advised people to rely on official updates and seek assistance through designated channels in case of emergency.
