Asom Mala 4.0: Assam unveils Rs 10,000 crore push for rural connectivity

Guwahati, Aug 19 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced a major expansion of the state’s road connectivity programme, saying the government is set to accelerate infrastructure development in rural areas through ‘Asom Mala 4.0’, a Rs 10,000 crore initiative.

Taking to social media platform X, CM Sarma said the state government was working towards taking connectivity to every corner of Assam and linking rural areas more closely with the state’s broader economic growth.

“We are taking connectivity to every corner of Assam. After building an extensive road network across the length and breadth of the State, we are now set to accelerate this transformation with Asom Mala 4.0, a Rs 10,000 crore initiative that will connect rural Assam more closely to the State’s growth story,” the Chief Minister said.

According to the details shared by the Chief Minister, Asom Mala 4.0 will focus on the development of around 800 km of roads, aimed at further strengthening the state’s road infrastructure and improving connectivity in rural and less-connected areas.

The initiative is expected to build upon the road development work undertaken under the Asom Mala programme, which has emerged as one of the Assam government’s key infrastructure initiatives.

The latest phase is aimed at improving last-mile connectivity and providing better road links between rural communities and major economic, administrative and commercial centres. Improved road infrastructure is also expected to facilitate easier movement of people and goods, strengthen access to markets and services, and support economic activities in rural areas.

The Chief Minister’s announcement comes as Assam continues to focus on infrastructure development as a key component of its broader economic transformation agenda.

The government has been emphasising improved connectivity as essential for attracting investment, boosting trade and tourism, and integrating remote and rural areas with the state’s developing economic hubs.

With Asom Mala 4.0, the state government plans to further expand the road network and ensure that rural Assam benefits more directly from ongoing development and growth.

The Rs 10,000 crore initiative is therefore expected to become a significant component of Assam’s next phase of infrastructure-led development.
