Bengal: Special celebration held at iconic Howrah station

Kolkata, Aug 31 (IANS) A special celebration was held at the iconic Howrah railway station on Monday, in accordance with the directions of the Ministry of Railways to commemorate the rich heritage, legacy and enduring significance of India’s iconic stations.

The station is steeped in history. When Joshua Greenbow started for the Hooghly station from Howrah on August 15, 1854, he was driving the first train in eastern India. The station then comprised a temporary tin shed, a small booking office and a single line flanked by narrow platforms.

Today, the station has 24 platforms and handles nearly 252 mail/express and 500 EMU trains per day. The daily footfall at the station is over one million. It also played a key role during India’s freedom struggle, allowing freedom fighters access to several locations in neighbouring districts.

Vishal Kapoor, the divisional railway manager of Howrah, led the day’s Station Mahotsav celebration. A series of cultural and heritage‑oriented events were organised for passengers, staff and members of the public. Held at the north, or old complex of the station, most of them took place under the “Boro Ghori”, or large clock. The “Boro Ghori” is a landmark within the station, a heritage structure that has completed a century this year.

Kapoor, in his address, highlighted the glorious history of the station, its pivotal role in the growth and development of the Indian Railways network, and the importance of preserving and showcasing railway heritage for future generations. He said the station also brought about economic development of the region by providing mobility.

The cultural performances included an engaging nukkad natak and colourful dance presentations. Members of the Bharat Scouts and Guides conducted a flag march through the historic premises. A special highlight was the ceremonial release of helium balloons dedicated to Station Mahotsav. The symbolic gesture represented the continuing journey, aspirations and progress of Howrah Division, while reaffirming its deep connection with its illustrious heritage.

A specially curated heritage gallery was also unveiled, showcasing the remarkable journey of Howrah Station and Howrah Division from their iconic past to the present era of modernisation and technological transformation. The gallery features rare photographs, historical exhibits and model trains, offering visitors an insightful glimpse into the evolution of the railway system and the transformation of Howrah Station over the decades.

“By bringing together significant glimpses of the past alongside the continuous technological and infrastructural advancements of Indian Railways, the heritage gallery has been dedicated to the public and will remain open for viewing for the next three days, providing passengers, railway enthusiasts and visitors an opportunity to explore and appreciate the rich legacy of one of India’s most iconic railway stations,” an official said.
