Chennai, Aug 31 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will reconvene on Monday after a two-day weekend break, with demands for grants concerning four key departments scheduled to be taken up for discussion.

The House has so far completed debates on the demands for grants of 32 departments as part of the ongoing Budget Session for the 2026-27 financial year. The department-wise discussions commenced on August 17 after the conclusion of the general debate on the State Budget and the Agriculture Budget.

The Tamil Nadu government presented the General Budget for 2026-27 in the Assembly on August 5, followed by the Agriculture Budget on August 6. Members of the ruling and opposition parties participated in the general discussion on the two budgets on August 7, 10 and 11. Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson and Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister R. Vinod delivered their replies to the debate on August 12.

The Assembly subsequently began considering the demands for grants of individual government departments, allowing legislators to raise constituency-level issues and scrutinise departmental spending proposals.

Monday’s proceedings will begin with Question Hour, during which ministers will respond to questions submitted by members on various matters concerning their constituencies and government policies.

After Question Hour, the House will take up the demands for grants of the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons Department, Prohibition and Excise Department, Social Welfare and Women’s Rights Department, and Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department.

Members from the treasury and opposition benches are expected to participate in the debate and raise issues relating to welfare assistance for persons with disabilities, enforcement of the state’s excise policies, women’s safety and social security programmes, and measures to support farmers.

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who holds the portfolio for the welfare of differently abled persons, will respond to matters concerning that department.

Prohibition and Excise Minister K. Vignesh, Social Welfare and Women’s Rights Minister K. Jagadeeswari, and Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister R. Vinod will answer questions and respond to points raised by legislators concerning their respective departments.

Before replying to the debate, the ministers are expected to announce new schemes, policy measures and development initiatives relating to their portfolios. The Assembly will later vote on the demands for grants, authorising the government to meet departmental expenditure during the current financial year.
