Assam unveils Rs 55,000 crores connectivity push with highways, bridges, tunnels

Guwahati, Aug 28 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday highlighted the state government’s infrastructure push under the Assam Budget 2026, saying projects worth more than Rs 55,000 crore will focus on highways, bridges and tunnels to strengthen connectivity across the state.

In a post on X, Sarma said the next phase of Assam’s growth would be driven by major investments in transport and connectivity infrastructure.

He said the large-scale projects are aimed at “shrinking distances” and accelerating economic growth while contributing to the government’s vision of building a “Viksit Assam”.

The Chief Minister’s post underlined the importance of highways, bridges and tunnels in expanding Assam’s connectivity network and supporting the state’s broader development agenda.

The proposed infrastructure push is expected to strengthen road connectivity between different parts of Assam and improve links with the wider Northeast.

Improved connectivity can also support the movement of people and goods, facilitate trade and commerce and provide better access to markets and essential services.

The focus on major connectivity infrastructure also assumes significance for Assam’s role as a gateway to the Northeast.

Better road infrastructure can help improve logistical links between the state and neighbouring regions, potentially supporting investment, tourism and economic activity.

Sarma has repeatedly emphasised infrastructure development as a key component of Assam’s growth strategy, particularly as the state seeks to expand connectivity between urban centres, rural areas and emerging economic zones.

The Rs 55,000-crore-plus figure cited by the Chief Minister covers what he described as “transformative connectivity projects”, with highways, bridges and tunnels forming the core of the infrastructure push.

The announcement comes amid the state’s wider efforts to accelerate infrastructure development and create the foundations for sustained economic growth.

By placing connectivity at the centre of the development agenda, the Assam government is seeking to reduce travel distances and improve mobility while strengthening the state’s physical and economic integration.

Sarma’s post described the infrastructure programme as a major step towards creating a more connected and economically vibrant Assam under the vision of “Viksit Assam”.
