Celebrations turn to tragedy: Wife shot dead by husband in Bihar; accused on the run

Patna, Aug 26 (IANS) Celebrations of a family turned into a tragedy as a woman who had given birth to a baby girl a few days ago, was allegedly shot dead by her husband following a domestic dispute in Chaklalshahi village under the Halai police station area of Samastipur district of Bihar on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred during a family celebration marking the newborn daughter’s Chhathi ceremony, held six days after her birth.

The family had reportedly been celebrating the arrival of a daughter after having two sons.

According to the family, an argument broke out between Manjula Devi and her husband, Suraj Sahani, during the ceremony.

The dispute reportedly escalated, after which Manjula was allegedly shot.

She sustained critical injuries and collapsed at the scene, leaving the family in a state of shock.

Her brother rushed her to Samastipur Sadar Hospital on a motorcycle, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Manjula’s maternal family has accused her husband of carrying out the shooting.

Suraj Sahani has reportedly been absconding since the incident, and police teams are searching for him.

After receiving information, Halai police reached the village and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Officers are questioning family members and local residents to establish what led to the dispute and reconstruct the sequence of events.

A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was called to the crime scene on Wednesday morning to collect scientific evidence.

Police are also attempting to recover the weapon allegedly used in the shooting.

Officials said the investigation is being conducted from all angles.

The district police have registered an FIR under the relevant Sections of murder against the deceased woman’s husband Suraj Sahani based on the written complaint lodged by her brother.

Police personnel have recovered the dead body and sent it for post-mortem at Sadar Hospital in Samastipur.

Further action will be based on the post-mortem findings, FSL report and statements of family members and witnesses. The two families and the small children of the young couple are in a state of shock over the turn of events.

The precise circumstances and motive are expected to become clearer as the investigation progresses and the accused is traced.
