Meghalaya govt to set up permanent Me’gong festival venue

Shillong, Aug 18 (IANS) The Meghalaya government has acquired 96 acres of land at Rongalgre in East Garo Hills to develop a permanent venue for the Me’gong Festival, with plans to create replica villages showcasing the traditional lifestyles and cultures of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo communities.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced the initiative on Tuesday while speaking at a programme. He said the proposed cultural destination is currently in the planning stage, but work has already begun after the government acquired the land.

The project is envisaged as an immersive cultural experience where tourists and visitors can stay in traditional-style villages and experience the customs, lifestyles and heritage of Meghalaya’s indigenous communities. “When people go there for the Me’gong festival, they can actually go and stay in a Khasi village,” Sangma said, explaining that visitors would be able to experience how people traditionally lived in such villages.

Similar facilities are planned for Garo and Jaintia communities, with the government looking to include different cultural groups such as the Pnar and War within the proposed site.

The Chief Minister said the initiative would offer tourists a deeper understanding of Meghalaya’s tribal heritage, rather than limiting cultural tourism to conventional festivals and performances. He linked the project to the state government’s broader efforts to preserve Meghalaya’s cultural identity amid rapid social and technological change.

Sangma said preserving indigenous traditions was particularly important for younger generations who are increasingly exposed to global influences through social media and other digital platforms. He emphasised the need to create opportunities for young people to remain connected with their cultural roots while also presenting Meghalaya’s heritage to visitors from across the country and abroad.

The proposed permanent Me’gong venue is expected to combine cultural preservation with tourism promotion, creating a space where traditional architecture, community practices and indigenous lifestyles can be experienced in an organised setting.

The initiative also comes as Meghalaya continues to position its diverse tribal heritage as a key component of its tourism strategy. The government hopes the project at Rongalgre will eventually provide a permanent cultural tourism destination and give visitors a more direct and immersive experience of the state’s three major tribal traditions.
