Bengal: Humayun Kabir paints graffiti for son ahead of Rejinagar bypoll

Kolkata, Aug 15 (IANS) Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) Chairman and Naoda MLA Humayun Kabir on Saturday started writing wall graffiti in his son’s name in Murshidabad district’s Rejinagar for the upcoming Assembly bypoll.

Although the Election Commission is yet to announce bypolls for Rejinagar and Nandigram Assembly constituencies in West Bengal, Humayun Kabir has already declared that his son Golam Nabi Azad alias Robin will contest the by‑election in Rejinagar with the AJUP’s symbol, the flute. On Saturday, he began the process of writing wall graffiti in his son’s name.

Humayun said many people in Rejinagar were following the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and supporting them from behind. He alleged that the administration was running on the BJP’s words but asserted that the AJUP would have the last laugh. “Golam Nabi Azad will win from Rejinagar,” he said.

Humayun Kabir claimed that even after the BJP and the state’s Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s triumph, it would not be possible to bloom lotus in Rejinagar.

It may be noted that Suvendu Adhikari won from two seats in the Assembly polls earlier this year, Bhabanipur and Nandigram. Similarly, Humayun Kabir won from Rejinagar and Naoda seats on the AJUP symbol.

Suvendu Adhikari has resigned from the Nandigram seat and Humayun Kabir has done the same from Rejinagar. It is initially heard that the Assembly by‑elections in these two seats are going to be held in the next two months. However, the poll notification is yet to be announced.

In Rejinagar, Humayun Kabir defeated the nearest BJP candidate Bapan Ghosh by 58,876 votes. The margin of votes between Humayun and the third‑placed Trinamool Congress candidate Ataur Rahman was 81,818. Humayun secured 51.62 per cent of the votes, placing the AJUP slightly ahead in Rejinagar.

On July 10, Suvendu Adhikari came to an organisational meeting in Rejinagar and promised several development projects, including a bridge over the Bhagirathi River at Ramnagarghat. He also announced another public meeting in Rejinagar in August.

Therefore, after the change of government in the state, the contest is expected to be tight in Rejinagar.
