Andhra: CBI arrests CGST superintendent in bribery case

Vijayawada, Aug 10 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the Superintendent, CGST, Ibrahimpatnam, Vijayawada, in a bribery case, officials said on Monday.

The CBI registered the case against Banothu Mangamma based on a complaint alleging that the accused public servant demanded a bribe of Rs 1,50,000 from the complainant, who runs a private company. The bribe was allegedly sought for not issuing a demand notice towards tax liability and for closing the matter.

Acting swiftly, the CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red‑handed while accepting Rs 50,000 as part of the demanded bribe amount. The agency confirmed that the bribe money was recovered during the trap proceedings.

Searches are being conducted at the accused’s premises in Vijayawada to gather further evidence. Officials said the searches are aimed at identifying documents, digital records and other materials that may establish the extent of the alleged corruption.

The accused has been arrested and will be produced before the competent court at Vijayawada on Tuesday. The CBI said the investigation in the case is continuing and further details will be shared once the inquiry progresses.

Officials emphasised that the agency remains committed to acting against corruption in government departments, particularly in revenue and taxation services where public complaints are frequent. The arrest highlights the CBI’s ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in public service.
