Meghalaya CM reviews ‘Tracing the Roots’ initiative to document indigenous heritage

Shillong, Aug 7 (IANS) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday reviewed the progress of the state’s ambitious ‘Tracing the Roots’ initiative, an interdisciplinary research project aimed at documenting the history, culture, language and heritage of the state’s indigenous communities through scientific and academic research.

Chairing a review meeting, the Chief Minister held detailed discussions with the committee constituted to steer the project and assessed the implementation roadmap of the initiative, which is being undertaken by the Department of Arts and Culture.

The project seeks to develop a comprehensive, evidence-based understanding of the origins and historical evolution of Meghalaya’s indigenous communities by combining traditional knowledge with modern research methodologies.

According to officials, the initiative will adopt a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together historical research, oral traditions, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, linguistics, archaeology, ethnography and, where appropriate, genetic studies to examine various theories related to the origins and migration of indigenous communities in the state.

Besides tracing historical developments, the project will document customary institutions, festivals, material culture and the vitality of indigenous languages. It also aims to create permanent digital archives to preserve cultural resources and historical records for future generations.

Reviewing the progress of the initiative, Sangma said the project is intended to build a scientifically credible and evidence-backed understanding of Meghalaya’s indigenous heritage while safeguarding oral histories and traditional cultural practices that form an integral part of the state’s identity.

Officials informed the Chief Minister that preparatory work for the initiative has been underway since February. This includes the constitution of research teams, formulation of the project framework and the development of dedicated digital platforms to document research progress, preserve knowledge resources and facilitate public participation throughout the course of the study.

The government also plans to collaborate with leading national and international academic institutions for comparative historical, linguistic and cultural research. The initiative is expected to result in scholarly publications, educational resources and comprehensive digital repositories that can serve researchers, policymakers and educational institutions.

The state government said the ‘Tracing the Roots’ initiative is designed to preserve Meghalaya’s rich indigenous heritage through rigorous academic research while strengthening cultural identity and creating a lasting repository of knowledge for future generations.
