Patna, July 31 (IANS) The Vigilance Investigation Bureau has achieved another major success in its ongoing anti-corruption campaign in Bihar, arresting a police Sub-Inspector red-handed while allegedly accepting a Rs 50,000 bribe.
The accused officer has been identified as Umesh Kumar, posted at Risiap Police Station in Aurangabad district.
He was arrested on Friday, near the Panchayat Bhawan located behind the Risiap police station.
According to the Vigilance Bureau, the action followed a written complaint submitted in Patna by Lakshman Ram, son of Saryu Ram and a resident of Ganpat Dua under Risiap police station.
The complainant and his neighbours had cases registered against each other’s families.
Umesh Kumar was serving as the investigating officer in the matter.
The Vigilance Bureau alleged that the Sub-Inspector demanded Rs 50,000 from Lakshman Ram in return for removing the names of his two sons from the FIR in Case No. 159/26 and dropping certain charges.
The complainant further alleged that the officer threatened to add more serious charges to the case if the demanded amount was not paid.
Following the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau conducted a discreet verification of the allegations.
Officials said the verification established the authenticity of the alleged bribe demand, following which an FIR was registered and preparations for a trap operation were initiated.
A special trap team was constituted under the leadership of Santosh Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Vigilance Investigation Bureau, Patna.
According to an official, the complainant handed over the Rs 50,000 to Umesh Kumar near the Panchayat Bhawan as planned.
Vigilance personnel positioned nearby in plain clothes immediately intervened and arrested the Sub-Inspector while allegedly accepting the bribe.
The accused officer has been booked in Vigilance Police Station Case No. 091/26 and brought to Patna for interrogation.
After completion of the necessary legal formalities, Umesh Kumar will be produced before the Special Court (Vigilance), Patna.
The arrest is being viewed as another significant action by the Bihar Vigilance Investigation Bureau in its ongoing drive against corruption in government departments, particularly against officials allegedly demanding bribes from members of the public.
