Bhubaneswar, Odisha – August 2025 – Thirteen-year-old Aakash, a bright and spirited student in Grade 8, is in a life-or-death race against time. Diagnosed at the tender age of three with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a rare and fatal genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle degeneration, Aakash has spent the last decade fighting to stay ahead of the disease that is gradually taking away his mobility, and eventually threatens his heart and lungs.
DMD, a condition that primarily affects young boys, is caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene, the largest known human gene. As the disease progresses, muscle strength deteriorates, leaving many patients wheelchair-bound before their teenage years. Tragically, life expectancy often doesn’t extend beyond the third decade.
Aakash’s father, Vikas, recalls the early signs – toe-walking, difficulty rising from the floor, and enlarged calf muscles. After years of consultations and tests, including CPK and MLPA, the family received the devastating diagnosis in 2015.
Since then, they have spared no effort in his treatment. Over ₹5 crores have been spent over the past 10 years on stem cell therapies, steroids such as Defcort, physiotherapy, and a host of supplements including Calcimax, CoQ10, Carnisure, and traditional remedies like Amla and Aloe Vera.
Despite the physical toll, Aakash remains intellectually sharp and emotionally resilient. He’s passionate about mathematics and history, speaks fluent English, and dreams of one day joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). He even runs his own YouTube channel, inspiring others with his courage and determination.
Now, there is a glimmer of hope. In 2024, the US FDA approved Elevidys, a revolutionary gene therapy that could halt the progression of DMD. The therapy is available at Fakeeh University Hospital in Dubai, but the cost of ₹29 crore is far beyond the family’s means.
“This is not just a medical expense—it’s a shot at life for our son,” says Vikas. “Every child deserves a chance to live their dreams. We are doing everything we can, but we need your help to reach this impossible goal.”
The family is appealing to individuals, philanthropists, and corporate donors to contribute to their crowdfunding campaign hosted on ImpactGuru. Aakash’s story is not just one of struggle, but one of hope, brilliance, and the possibility of a future.
