Delhi L-G TS Sandhu lays foundation stone of modern dog shelter in Dwarka

New Delhi, July 28 (IANS) Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s modern dog shelter in Dwarka, promising to provide a safe destination to stray canines for sterilisation and vaccination.

In a message on X, Sandhu said, “Laid the foundation stone of a modern dog shelter at Sector-29, Dwarka today, to be developed by @MCD_Delhi along with Hon’ble Mayor Shri @praveshwahi Ji, Hon’ble MP Shri @RamvirBidhuri Ji, Hon’ble MLA Shri @kgahlot Ji, and other distinguished guests.”

“Spread across approximately 6,050 square metres, the facility will provide safe shelter, care and rehabilitation for stray dogs with modern infrastructure designed to ensure their welfare and well-being,” said Sandhu.

“Also visited Delhi’s only cremation centre for small animals, and advised MCD to actively involve animal welfare organisations, dog lovers, veterinarians and subject experts so that their experience and knowledge help shape these initiatives in a sustainable and compassionate manner,” he said.

“This project is a fine example of public-private partnership, with the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation’s CSR support enabling its development at zero cost to the MCD, further strengthening Delhi’s commitment to animal welfare,” said the Lieutenant Governor.

Rough estimates put the number of stray dogs in Delhi between 8 lakh and 10 lakh. This figure mainly relates to the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The Capital records over 25,000 annual dog bite cases at various hospitals.

Later, the L-G reviewed the development activities at Aerocity near the airport.

“En route from Dwarka, visited Aerocity today, where GMR officials presented an overview of the district’s ongoing infrastructure development, including sustainable urban planning, water conservation, traffic management and last-mile Metro connectivity,” he said.

“Emphasised the importance of close coordination with @official_dda, given Aerocity’s proximity to Dwarka, one of Delhi’s key growth corridors. Directed that green infrastructure and sustainability remain at the core of all future planning to support the Capital’s long-term, balanced development. #ViksitDilli,” he said on X.
