Assam Budget ignores recurring flood crisis, key welfare schemes: Congress MLA

Guwahati, July 13 (IANS) Assam Congress MLA, Joy Prakash Das, on Monday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led state government over the 2026-27 Budget, alleging that it had ignored Assam’s pressing issues, particularly the recurring flood crisis, while focussing on projects that do not address the immediate concerns of the people.

Speaking to reporters here, Das said large parts of Assam continue to be devastated by annual floods, with several districts remaining submerged, but the Budget failed to provide a comprehensive road map to tackle the recurring disaster.

“The double engine government of the BJP has been in power for the last one decade, yet every year floodwaters inundate vast areas of the state. People continue to suffer, but instead of addressing these challenges, the government is talking about bringing Metro rail. The Budget speaks about Metro projects while ignoring the real issues faced by the people,” he said.

The Congress legislator alleged that the state government was “misleading the people” through announcements that lacked substance and practical implementation.

Das further claimed that several flagship schemes and development initiatives that had earlier been highlighted by the government found no mention in the latest Budget.

He alleged that no allocation had been made for Char-Chapori development despite repeated assurances, adding that schemes such as Assam Darshan, once projected as a popular initiative, were also absent from the Budget proposals.

The MLA also claimed that there was no significant provision for the development of Majuli, one of the state’s most important cultural and river island regions.

Referring to the government’s announcements relating to fisheries and water bodies, Das said while ponds had been discussed, there was no concrete plan to support fish farmers or improve the livelihoods of people dependent on the sector.

“We feel that this government is surviving only on rhetoric. It continues to make big announcements, but there is little on the ground to address the actual problems of the people. This Budget offers nothing beyond lofty promises,” he alleged.

The Assam government had recently presented the 2026-27 Budget in the Assembly, outlining major investments in infrastructure, urban transport and welfare initiatives.
