Fresh police complaint filed against Abhishek Banerjee, 10 others in Sebaashray health camp case

Kolkata, July 10 (IANS) A fresh police complaint had been filed against Trinamool Congress general secretary over the erstwhile community healthcare outreach initiative ‘Sebaashray’ launched by Abhishek Banerjee at Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas district where from he is a three-time Lok Sabha MP.

The nature of the fresh complaint is quite serious. Malati Biswas, a resident of Maheshtala area under Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency had filed a police complaint against Abhishek Banerjee, also the nephew of the former West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, alleging faulty treatment at the ‘Sebaashray’ free health camp, which allegedly led to the loss of one of her limbs.

In the complaint filed at Rabindranagar Police Station under the Diamond Harbour Police district, Biswas had claimed she went to the ‘Sebaashray’ free health camp with a complaint of knee-pain and the doctor there prescribed her some medicines.

However, as per the police complaint, instead of getting better, her knee-pain aggravated following which she went to the ‘Sebaashray’ health camp again. But this time, instead of treating her, the doctors referred her to the MR Bangur Hospital on the Southern outskirts of Kolkata.

The doctors at MR Bangur, as per the police complaint, told her that her knee-condition deteriorated because of wrong medicines being prescribed to her. Thereafter, she was referred to the National Medical College & Hospital at Park Circus in central Kolkata,

Meanwhile, the condition deteriorated further and finally her right limb had to be amputated.

Thereafter, she contacted the ‘Sebaashray’ authorities again seeking explanation for the wrong medication. However, they totally ignored her and her repeated attempts to contact Abhishek Banerjee in the matter also did not yield any result.

Since the change of regime in West Bengal, there have been a total of 17 complaints registered against ‘Sebaashray’ including the last one from Malati Biswas. The police had also started investigation in the matter by filing two separate FIRs.

The complaints are varied. While the majority are related to medical negligence and wrong lines of treatment, there are complaints about running such camps without authorisation from the state health department, allegedly hiring unqualified doctors at these camps and alleged distribution of expired medicines.

Recently, local Bharatiya Janata Party leader Abhijit Das a.k.a. Bobby, floated a prescription where the medical registration of the prescribing doctor was not mentioned in the prescription letter.

Das had also claimed that there was rampant use of Ultrasonography machines at the health camps without proper authorisation.
