Heavy rain likely in west TN with moderate showers across state

Chennai, June 30 (IANS) Moderate rainfall is expected in several parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, while heavy rain is likely over the hill regions of Coimbatore and parts of the Nilgiris, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai.

The weather office said a trough extending from the north coastal districts of Tamil Nadu to the Kanyakumari Sea continues to influence weather conditions across the state. Under its impact, the hill areas of Coimbatore district and isolated places in the Nilgiris are likely to receive heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds.

The RMC has also forecast moderate rain with strong winds at isolated places across northern Tamil Nadu, while light rain is expected in a few locations in the southern districts.

Meteorologists said the prevailing atmospheric conditions remain favourable for scattered rainfall over several parts of the state, providing some respite from the prevailing heat, particularly in interior regions.

In Chennai, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy through the day, with moderate rainfall likely in a few localities during the evening and night hours. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during periods of intense showers and gusty winds, especially in low-lying areas that are prone to waterlogging.

Despite the forecast of rain, heatwave-like conditions continued to prevail in many parts of Tamil Nadu on Monday. Seven weather stations recorded temperatures above 37.7 degrees Celsius, reflecting the persistent influence of hot and humid conditions across the state.

The highest temperature was recorded in Cuddalore and Vellore, where the mercury touched 38.9 degrees Celsius.

Other places, including Tiruttani, Nagapattinam and Parangipettai, also witnessed intense daytime heat.

Chennai also experienced sweltering conditions, with temperatures exceeding 37.8 degrees Celsius on Monday. Weather officials said daytime temperatures in the city are likely to remain above this level on Tuesday as well, despite the possibility of evening showers.

Meteorologists noted that such weather patterns are common during the southwest monsoon season, when intermittent rainfall coexists with high daytime temperatures and humidity.

While the anticipated rain is expected to bring temporary relief from the heat in several districts, authorities have advised the public to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the afternoon sun and exercise caution during thunderstorms and strong winds.

The RMC said it would continue to monitor the evolving weather system and issue further advisories if conditions change.

Residents, particularly those living in hilly and vulnerable areas, have been urged to follow official weather updates and take necessary precautions during periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds.
