Mizoram govt intensifies fight against drug menace

Aizawl, June 23 (IANS) Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar on Tuesday said the state government, in collaboration with various organisations, has been carrying out sustained and coordinated efforts to curb drug abuse and trafficking, reaffirming its commitment to tackling the growing narcotics challenge in the state.

Addressing a seminar on the theme “Emerging Trends and New Challenges Faced by Mizoram”, the Minister stressed the need for stronger and more coordinated action.

He noted that Mizoram’s relatively small size and population present an opportunity for more effective collective action. He expressed confidence that if all sections of society work together, the state can make significant progress in addressing the drug menace and safeguarding future generations.

The seminar was organised in connection with the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on June 26.

Social Welfare Department Director Sushil Singh said Mizoram’s geographical location along international borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, and its proximity to the infamous ‘Golden Triangle’, make it particularly vulnerable to drug trafficking and substance abuse.

He emphasised that the issue must be addressed through a comprehensive approach encompassing prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, awareness generation, and community participation, while calling for greater collaboration among government agencies, civil society organisations, churches, and citizens.

Secretary, Excise & Narcotics Department, C. Lalruaia, highlighted the need for Mizoram to continuously develop new strategies and adapt to emerging trends in drug abuse by utilising advanced knowledge, expertise, and innovative approaches.

The seminar featured presentations by experts on various aspects of drug abuse and rehabilitation. At the end of the seminar, an interactive discussion and question-and-answer session was held, providing participants with an opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences, and explore collaborative approaches to addressing the challenges posed by drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The seminar was jointly organised by the Social Welfare Department, Women & Child Development Department, Health and Family Welfare Department, Mizoram Police, Excise and Narcotics Department, Higher and Technical Education Department, Inspector General, Prison, School Education Department, Information and Public Relations Department, Assam Rifles, Border Security Force, Deputy Commissioner of Aizawl District, and many local organisations including the Young Mizo Association.
