Mayawati claims growing Brahmin support for BSP in UP ahead of Assembly polls

Lucknow, June 22 (IANS) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Monday said that the Brahmin community, along with other upper-caste groups, is leaning increasingly towards the BSP in Uttar Pradesh. She said this has led to unease among rival political parties.

She said that, like in 2007, the BSP could again be in a position to form a full majority government with the support of the Brahmin community, as upper-caste groups have the highest level of trust in the party’s policies and leadership.

In a post on X, Mayawati said that the BSP has begun the process of candidate selection from the upper-caste community, especially Brahmins, for the Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh.

“Since this move, there has been growing restlessness among all opposition parties, particularly the Samajwadi Party,” she said, adding that this situation appears natural, as it reflects the possibility of a repeat of the 2007 election outcome when the BSP secured a full majority government.

Mayawati said it is well known that in a populous state like Uttar Pradesh, the interests of the Brahmin community among upper castes are best safeguarded within the BSP. She added that the party has demonstrated this through its “Sarvajan Hitay, Sarvajan Sukhay” principle by implementing it at the organisational level.

She alleged that under the governments of other parties, people from this community have, for a considerable period, felt neglected, insecure, and deceived.

Mayawati further said that in view of the growing inclination of the Brahmin community towards the BSP, the process of giving them party tickets is ongoing. She added that they have full confidence in the BSP’s leadership and believe that if the party forms the government, they will receive the same respect and representation as before.

She said that, along with Brahmins, people from other upper-caste groups such as Kshatriyas and Vaishyas, as well as other communities, will also be given tickets in line with their preparedness, following the principle of “proportionate participation based on preparedness”.

Mayawati said that, unlike other parties, the BSP does not indulge in narrow and self-serving politics by offering “lollipops” to a select few, but considers it its constitutional duty to work for the welfare of the entire society.

She added that the party’s policies and programmes are focused on public interest and welfare and are effective in maintaining law and order and controlling crime.
