India among world’s fastest clean energy transformers under PM Modi’s leadership: Pralhad Joshi

New Delhi, June 17 (IANS) India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing clean energy economies in the world over the past 12 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on Wednesday.

Highlighting the government’s ambitious push towards green energy and industrial decarbonisation, he said the National Green Hydrogen Mission is playing a pivotal role in accelerating the country’s transition to a sustainable and self-reliant energy future.

Speaking at the National Workshop on “Strengthening the National Green Hydrogen Mission: Through State Policies, Hubs & Infrastructure”, organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Joshi said India has made remarkable progress in renewable energy deployment and green hydrogen development.

“The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023 with a financial outlay of Rs 19,744 crore, is expected to position India as a global hub for the production, utilisation and export of green hydrogen,” he mentioned.

During the event, the Minister launched the Green Hydrogen Certification Portal of India (GHCI), developed by MNRE to facilitate transparent certification and regulatory compliance under the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme. The portal is expected to strengthen accountability and create a robust framework for the emerging green hydrogen ecosystem.

Calling upon states to play a more active role in advancing the mission, Joshi said six states have already notified dedicated Green Hydrogen Policies, while seven others have incorporated hydrogen-related provisions into their industrial and renewable energy policies. Four more states are currently finalising their policy frameworks.

The Minister highlighted significant strides in domestic manufacturing, stating that financial incentives have been awarded to 15 companies to establish indigenous electrolyser manufacturing capacity of 3,000 MW per year. The move is aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imported supply chains and strengthening local manufacturing capabilities.

In the refinery sector, contracts have been awarded for the supply of 30,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green hydrogen to Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL).
